Oktoberfest continues to grow as Kitchener-Waterloo's most successful festival because of what it gives to every member of the community. The Spirit of Gemuetlichkeit touches everyone, beginning with the students. If your son or daughter comes home telling you that some Pumpkin Head Guy named Onkel Hans visited their school they do not have an overactive imagination to be concerned about. What is more likely is that your child's school has participated in the Kitchener-Waterloo Oktoberfest Schools Program.
The Schools Committee was established almost 20 years ago with the goal of incorporating the multicultural aspects of Oktoberfest with the elementary school curriculum.
Students are treated to fun and informative presentations about German culture. They learn about traditional clothing, participate in polkas and waltzes, and German vocabulary. Onkel Hans and Miss Oktoberfest pay a special visit as the goodwill ambassadors of the festival and local musicians perform popular Oktoberfest songs for the students.
This year, the schools program will be enjoyed by more than 55 schools during the Festival.
