Roll Out the Barrel - The 47th annual Kitchener-Waterloo Oktoberfest is here!

(Waterloo Region, Canada – October 9, 2015) – Kitchener-Waterloo Oktoberfest opened to fanfare, friends and flowing beer this morning, kicking off the 47th edition of Canada’s Greatest Bavarian Festival!

The Official Opening Ceremonies and Keg Tapping took place at Kitchener’s Carl Zehr Square this morning as thousands of chicken-dancing spectators celebrated the return of the nine-day Festival.

Special Guests included newly crowned Miss Oktoberfest Holly Pearson and Grammy Award Winner Walter Ostanek, who led the crowd in a rousing chorus of traditional Oktoberfest Songs.

Oktoberfest Festival President Alfred Lowrick, along with assistance from City Mayors and K-W Oktoberfest Inc organizers, officially opened the Festival by tapping the Ceremonial Keg. Also joining in the Opening Ceremonies was special guest Ron MacLean from the Rogers Hometown Hockey Tour and Hockey Night in Canada. As the Keg was tapped the festival was declared open, beginning nine-days of festivities across the region.

The Region is preparing for more than 700,000 festival goers during this international event. German-Canadian Clubs – or Festhallen – throughout the region are looking forward to offering the German music, food, and culture that is at the heart of this Bavarian festival.

Traditional highlights and favourites are back this year, including: Rocktoberfest, the Great Oktoberfest Barrel Race, OktoberFEAST Food Truck Fest and the Oktoberfest Car Show; not to mention the Rogers Hometown Hockey Tour and the Oktoberfest Thanksgiving Day Parade and Onkel Hans Food Drive on Monday, October 12 with Parade Marshal Ron MacLean. Keep in mind, the parade route is different this year. It commences at King and Cedar in downtown Kitchener and concludes at Weber and Bridgeport Road in Waterloo.
