Roll Out the Barrel Kitchener-Waterloo Oktoberfest is here!

 

(Waterloo Region, Canada - October 7, 2016) - Prime Minister Justin Trudeau tapped the keg to officially open the 48th annual Kitchener-Waterloo Oktoberfest in front of a large, enthusiastic crowd in Downtown Kitchener at Carl Zehr Square.

"Our festival is excited to welcome Prime Minister Trudeau with one of our highest honours as the official keg tapper for 2016," said Alfred Lowrick, President of K-W Oktoberfest Inc. "Now that the 48th annual Kitchener-Waterloo Oktoberfest is officially open, we look forward to an incredible Festival".

Other special guests joining Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on stage were Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne, newly crowned Miss Oktoberfest Vanessa Buttinger, K-W Oktoberfest President Alfred Lowrick, Kitchener Mayor Barry Vrbanovic and Grammy Award Winner Walter Ostanek, who led the crowd in a rousing chorus of traditional Oktoberfest Songs.

The Region is preparing for more than 700,000 festival goers during this international event. German-Canadian Clubs - or Festhallen - throughout the region are looking forward to offering the German music, food, and culture that is at the heart of this Bavarian festival.

Traditional highlights and favourites are back this year, including:

• The OktoberFEAST Food Truck Fest (Oct 8 & 9)
• Great Oktoberfest Barrel Race (Oct 15)
• Fusstoberfest (Oct 8 & 9)
• OktoberLICIOUS (September 24 - October 16)
• Oktoberfest Car Show (Oct 15)
• The Oktoberfest Thanksgiving Day Parade and Onkel Hans Food Drive on Monday, October 10 with Parade Grand Marshals Steph Leclair and Kristen McKenzie winners from Season 4 of the Amazing Race Canada.

New this year, the Willkommen Platz will be located in Downtown Kitchener at Carl Zehr Square, the Oktoberfest Haus Festhalle will move from King and Frederick Streets into the Kitchener Market and a brand new Festhalle named The Berlin Haus will opens its doors at The Inn of Waterloo.
