Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to officially open 48th annual Kitchener-Waterloo Oktoberfest

(Waterloo Region, ON – October 6, 2016) – The Kitchener-Waterloo Oktoberfest Official Opening Ceremonies will include two additional guests this year. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Premier Kathleen Wynne will join Mayor Berry Vrbanovic, Regional Chair Ken Seiling and KW Oktoberfest President Alfred Lowrick to open the 48th annual Kitchener-Waterloo Oktoberfest.

The Honourable Prime Minister will officially tap the keg, marking the opening of the 2nd largest Bavarian Festival in the world.

“Our festival is excited to welcome Prime Minister Trudeau with one of our highest honours as the official keg tapper for 2016,” said Alfred Lowrick, President of K-W Oktoberfest Inc. “It was exactly 45 years ago, to the day, since his father Pierre Trudeau visited our festival. We are honoured to be able to continue this family tradition.”

The Official Opening Ceremonies takes place at Kitchener City Hall in Carl Zehr Square.

“Waterloo Region extended such a warm welcome to Prime Minister Trudeau last year when he joined us for Kitchener-Waterloo Oktoberfest during his campaign, that it is no surprise that he has decided to join us again this year – this time in an official capacity. We are thrilled to welcome both the Honourable Prime Minister and Premier Kathleen Wynne to this year’s festivities,” said Kitchener Mayor Berry Vrbanovic.

The Region is preparing for more than 700,000 festival goers during this international event. German-Canadian Clubs – or Festhallen – throughout the region are looking forward to offering the German music, food, and culture that is at the heart of this Bavarian festival.
